Mrs. Catherine Murphy - PreK  (Send e-mail)

A Rogers Park native, Mrs. Murphy attended St. Ignatius Elementary School and St. Gregory High School before earning a BA in Education with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education from Northeastern Illinois University. She led the Northeastern University Day Care Center for 10 years before starting her own preschool at home. Ms. Murphy has taught at two other Chicago Archdiocesan schools, St. Robert of Bellimair and St. Matthias, before coming to our school. She was married at St. Ignatius and has four children, two girls, two boys and two granddaughters. Prior to leading our preschool program, she was our Kindergarten teacher for four years. Ms. Murphy enjoys working at St. Mary’s because of the strong Catholic education, religious environment, and faculty.

"I enjoy teaching and being in a Catholic environment and being able to teach the PK students Bible stories, prayers and Christian songs that I remember enjoying that touched my heart when I was in Catholic school."

This week in class

Monday
Last week the children made mouse puppets for the letter M, they also traced the letter M and practiced sounding out the letter M. We also preformed an science experiment about what magnets are attracted to. The children were to test different objects and write down either yes or no next to each object they tested on the experiment chart.

Tuesday
Last week the children made newt puppets for the letter N, they also traced the letter N and practiced sounding out the letter N. Snowy Night in Chicago was the art project the kids worked on, they had to glue on buildings and cotton balls to look like Chicago in the snow.

Wednesday
Last week the children made octopus puppets for the letter O, they also traced the letter O and practiced sounding it out. The children enjoyed taking part in our classroom science experiment about melting ice.

Thursday
We enjoyed having all of the parents visit our classroom and participate in the parent/child presentation about their favorite place to visit in Chicago. We loved seeing all the fun pictures and objects each family brought in to share with the class. Mrs. Murphy read books about Chicago and had fun interactive songs for the children to enjoy.

Friday
We have had a lot of fun playing new educational games in the classroom through letter and number recognition. The children cooperated so well together to make the games fun by singing along to the songs with each game. The children also learned the holy trinity thorough religious activities and created a mobile. The last art activity we did was have the children draw pictures a their favorite thing they like about St. Mary of the Angels and put it on a heart.
